RECREATIONAL INFRASTRUCTURE CANADA PROGRAM APPLICATIONS NOW BEING ACCEPTED IN ALBERTA
May 12, 2009

(OTTAWA – 12 May 2009)  “I want to take the opportunity to remind municipalities that they have until May 29th to submit applications under the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program,” announced Leon Benoit, Member of Parliament for Vegreville-Wainwright. “I know, as a result of a seminar I hosted earlier this spring, that many municipalities are already hard at work on these applications but it is important to get them in before the deadline.”

Project proposals are due by May 29, 2009 and projects needing more time to develop have until June 19, 2009.

The RInC program is available for upgrades and repairs to local hockey rinks, swimming pools, sport fields and other recreational sites.

“Our Conservative Government’s investment in the Recreational Infrastructure Canada program will help put Canadians to work, encourage greater participation in physical education and use of recreational facilities,” explains Benoit.

“Through RInC, we are helping to ensure that communities across Canada have access to essential infrastructure today and in the future.”

Under RInC, the Conservative Government will provide up to one-third of total eligible costs, with a maximum project contribution of $1 million toward projects that will be completed by March 31, 2011.

The initial funding allocation under RInC for the West is almost $54 million.  Projects will be selected on the basis of merit and construction readiness.

“Our Conservative Government, through Canada’s Economic Action Plan, is taking steps to reduce the affects of the economic slowdown,” concludes Benoit “The Recreational Infrastructure Canada Program will stimulate benefits to the economy, create jobs and contribute to the quality of life right here in Vegreville-Wainwright.”

The Recreational Infrastructure Canada Program is part of the Conservative Government’s Economic Action Plan; a multi-faceted plan that is providing needed stimulus funding to ensure a quick recovery from the current economic downturn.
