IGNATIEFF THREATENS UNNECESSARY, OPPORTUNISTIC FALL ELECTION
September 02, 2009
OTTAWA (September 2, 2009)  –  “Canadians do not want and do not need the Liberals to force an unnecessary, opportunistic election that would interrupt the Government’s Economic Action Plan and would put Canada's economic recovery at risk” said Leon Benoit, Member of Parliament for Vegreville-Wainwright. Benoit was responding to Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff’s statement yesterday that his party will no longer support the government.

“Canadians went to the polls less than a year ago, and no one I have spoken to throughout the summer is in the mood for another election,” stated Benoit. “Frankly, in the middle of a global economic recession, it would be irresponsible to spend millions of dollars on an unnecessary election.”

“While Michael Ignatieff is clearly focused on his own self-interest, our Conservative Government remains focused on the economy, and we are working hard to implement our Economic Action Plan,” said Benoit. “The economy is the number one priority of our Government, and we need to continue to implement our Plan in order to create and maintain jobs, and stimulate economic growth.”

“Canadians neither need nor want a fourth federal election in five years, especially one which would place our country’s economic recovery in jeopardy,” concluded Benoit. “Political opportunism is the only reason for threatening to force an unnecessary election that interrupts work on the economy.  This is just further proof that Michael Ignatieff is not in it for Canadians.  He’s in it for himself.”
