Dear Principal/administrator:
As you may remember, last autumn I asked schools in my riding to send in their students’ artwork for a calendar I was composing. I was so pleased with the results that I have decided to hold a similar contest in 2011!
I am once again contacting all the schools in my constituency to issue a challenge to students for the best photograph, depicting a person, place, or thing that they like about their community, or province. The photos can be either black and white, or colour. It is important that contributors* also submit:
- A description of the scene depicted in each photo;
- information about when it was taken;
- an explanation of why this person/place/thing is important; and
- what it means to them and their community.
Pictures will be featured in various publications which will be distributed throughout the constituency in 2011. I would also like to display the pictures on my website (www.leonbenoit.ca) as extra recognition of the hard work the students put into these pieces, and as a unique display of the beautiful places and wonderful people that make up Vegreville-Wainwright.
As an added incentive, the contestant who submits the best photograph will receive as a grand prize travel vouchers for two from Edmonton to Ottawa. In the capital, I will guide the winner and her/his companion through some of the city’s most famous institutions.
The winner will be contacted in early 2011.
Digital images may be submitted on a CD-ROM, memory stick, or photos may printed out at a size of 4x6” and mailed in to either of the addresses above. Due to server restrictions we are unable to have the photographs emailed to us. Submissions will not be accepted by email.
While we cannot return the originals, please include names and addresses of each artist so we can notify those whose photographs will be published. Also, similar to last year, I would like to consider the submissions by grade level, so please have the students include their age and grade information.
This letter is accompanied by two release slips. Competitors must submit at least one of these slips (appropriately completed) if their contest entry is to be considered, as it allows for the publication of the photos. A second slip is necessary only if the contestant’s photo depicts a person or persons. If a student submits such an entry, this slip must be submitted with the contact information and signatures of those persons depicted in the photograph. Please note that this document will also be available on my website, should your students require additional copies of the slips.
Due to House of Commons guidelines, I would need to receive the photos by October 1st. The pictures can be mailed free of charge to Leon Benoit, MP, 613 Justice Bldg, House of Commons, Ottawa, ON, K1A 0A6.
