Benoit Condemns Liberal “Soft on Crime” Agenda
June 03, 2010

OTTAWA  –  Leon Benoit, Member of Parliament for Vegreville-Wainwright, spoke out today on the Liberal Party’s “soft on crime” agenda. “I am extremely disappointed in Mr. Ignatieff and his Liberals”, Benoit declared. “Our government has introduced legislation that will crack down on drug traffickers and organized crime, but the Liberals are refusing to support the bill. They claim that this legislation will be “too harsh” on criminals, and doubt whether the costs are worth it.”

The government’s latest crime legislation will introduce mandatory jail time for drug traffickers. “Drug trafficking severely harms our communities,” Benoit noted. “It destroys lives and families. Our government wants to bring justice to drug traffickers and gang members, and to end the pain caused to victims and communities. But the Liberals seem to think that monetary cost outweighs justice.”

“I fully support our stringent justice measures,” Benoit concluded. “Mr. Ignatieff seems to think that we shouldn’t punish criminals because of the cost. However, Canadians demand justice, and our government will deliver it as promised. We will continue to put the rights of law-abiding Canadians before the rights of criminals.”
