OTTAWA (January 2, 2009) – “In late November, the Federal Government began pre-budget consultations across Canada with Provincial, Territorial & Municipal government officials, and most importantly directly with Canadians,” says Leon Benoit, Member of Parliament for Vegreville-Wainwright.
“As I’ve said before, the current economic downtown was not caused by government, and government cannot solve it,” states Benoit. “Canada has been dragged into a mess as a result of problems internationally, and unfortunately we are feeling the effects. However, due to prudent fiscal planning and foresight, Canadians will be affected much less than people in other countries and we will continue to work to ensure that remains true.”
“What we have been doing is getting input from Canadians on what actions they feel the government should be taking to help our country weather this economic storm,” said Benoit. “I am asking all of my constituents to send me their thoughts so that they can be taken into account when budget 2009 is drafted. I have heard from a great many individuals, with some interesting and positive suggestions, and I want to make sure that everyone who wishes to, has the chance to submit their ideas.”
Leon asks that any comments be mailed, emailed or faxed in to his office before January 5th, 2009 at any of the following contacts:

“We intend to bring forward a smart stimulus that makes a real difference to Canadians,” explains Benoit. “We have to remember that this is a global problem and therefore our response must be on a national and international basis.”
“Let me assure you that our Government is working on your behalf every step of the way,” concludes Benoit. “My colleagues and I will be meeting several times prior to the next sitting of Parliament and budget discussions are our top priority. The Finance Minister has asked each of us for input and I am therefore reaching out to my constituents for their feedback. I will be discussing any and all responses with Mr. Flaherty as he prepares Budget 2009.”
