THE GOVERNMENT’S GOALS FOR FALL 2006
OTTAWA – “We are going to have one of the busiest sessions of Parliament in years under the new Conservative government,” states Leon Benoit, Member of Parliament for Vegreville-Wainwright, following recent National Caucus meetings. “There is a strong will amongst our entire caucus to follow through on our promises and ensure that the government is working for Canadians.”
Among the items on the agenda for the fall session are:
Softwood Lumber
Canada's new Government brought the softwood lumber deal’s enabling legislation to the House on the first day of the session, September 18th
this deal has delivered exactly what Canadians have asked for – an end to the uncertainty of litigation and trade conflict, and the reimbursement of over US$4 billion to Canadian companies.
Environment
Canada's new Government is committed to made-in-Canada solutions.
our government will focus on clean air, water, and land through practical solutions
Federal Accountability Act
the Accountability Act, the toughest anti-corruption law in Canadian history, has gone through the House of Commons and is now before the Senate.
Tough on Crime
• Canada's new Government is committed to keeping communities safe by continuing to get tough on crime, by:
• combating illegal drugs;
1 implementing tougher laws; and
2 protecting youth from sexual predators by raising the age of protection.
Agriculture
Implementing an ethanol and bio-diesel program which will benefit farmers and the environment; and
will deliver $2 billion to farmers before the end of the year.
“Despite our minority status, the Conservative government has accomplished a great deal since February,” concluded Benoit. “And that pace is going to continue – I am excited about our Fall ‘to-do’ list. There is a lot of work ahead but we are committed, focussed and energized. We will keep our promises.”
