House Of Commons Sends Clear Message To Senate
OTTAWA – Today the House of Commons passed a motion calling on the Senate to pass Bill C-2, The Tackling Violent Crime Act, by March 1st 2008. This Bill was introduced in Parliament on October 18th, 2008 and passed the House of Commons on November 28th, 2008. Since then it has sat in the Liberal-dominated Senate. “Today marks the 75th day since Bill C-2 came before this unelected, unaccountable Senate,” points out Leon Benoit, Member of Parliament for Vegreville-Wainwright.

“Canadians want the Tackling Violent Crime Act to become law and they are not fooled by the claim that the Senate simply cannot pass a piece of legislation that quickly,” continues Benoit. “They’ve had this Bill for over two months and most aspects of this legislation have been the subject of committee hearings at the Senate over the past two years.”

This is obviously a delay and obstruct tactic by the Liberal-dominated Senate. Benoit went on to explain that, while this legislation has been sitting in the Senate for over 75 days, these same Senators passed their last pay raise in only 9 days! “Clearly, they are quick to defend their own interests,” says Benoit. “They should be as quick to defend the interests of Canadians.”

The Tackling Violent Crime Act provides Canadians with increased security through the following measures:
  • Impose mandatory jail time for serious crimes committed using guns;
  • Create tougher bail rules when a gun is used to commit a crime;
  • Increase the age of protection for sexual activity from 14 years to 16 years;
  • Crack down on drug impaired driving; and
  • Ensure that high-risk and dangerous offenders face tougher consequences when they are sentenced and are better monitored post-release to prevent them from offending again.
The Liberal party “led” by Stephane Dion voted in favour of this Bill when it was before the House of Commons, but have since done nothing to persuade their colleagues in the Senate to move expeditiously to pass legislation which is important for Canadians. The Liberals, following Mr. Dion, actually fled the House of Commons to avoid the vote on the motion. “This is well below the level of professionalism that Canadians expect out of the Official Opposition and the Senate,” concluded Benoit.
