I am writing regarding the above-mentioned article by Michael Simpson.

I commend Mr. Simpson for writing the article and see no mistakes in its content except it seems to focus only on the last 1% cut to the GST, rather than the overall reduction from 7% to 5%.

It is important to note that this reduction will save taxpayers about $12 billion in 2008 and an increasing amount each year thereafter as our economy grows. While the amount on each purchase may not seem substantial, a tax reduction of over $60 billion over the next five years from the drop in GST alone is substantial. Combine this with our other tax cuts and it amounts to an astounding $190 billion in the next five years.

Taxpayers will notice the difference. It is a bit like the ‘Energizer Bunny’ - it is a gift which keeps on giving… except of course it’s no gift. It is the return of hard-earned tax dollars to the people who earned them.
