Killam, Alberta – The Town of Killam is moving forward with renovations to the Agriplex thanks to the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, a major job-creating investment from Canada’s Economic Action Plan.
Today, Leon Benoit, Member of Parliament for Vegreville – Wainwright, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced federal funding for the project that will boost Killam’s recreational infrastructure and stimulate the local economy.
“I’m pleased to announce our Government’s support for the Killam area,” said MP Leon Benoit. “The Agriplex is an important part of our community, and today’s investment will help ensure it remains a modern and accessible facility that will serve our needs for years to come.”
Federal funding of $213,167 is being provided through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program as part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan. The Province of Alberta, through the Municipal Sustainability Initiative, is also contributing $83,000 towards the project, while the Town of Killam is providing $221,333.
"Throughout the province, we have seen many great examples of Municipal Sustainability Initiative funding at work," said Doug Griffiths, MLA for Battle River-Wainwright. "I am so pleased that the Government of Alberta can support the Killam Agriplex - a project that will bring our communities together."
Funding is supporting the Town of Killam to construct a new zero-entry teaching pool that will be attached to the existing 25-metre pool in the Agriplex. Project activities include repairs and upgrades to the pool building. As the largest community in Flagstaff County, Killam serves as a vital recreational hub that contributes to the health and wellness of the entire region. The addition of a zero-entry teaching pool will enable the Agriplex to be universally accessible to people of different ages and abilities.
"The Killam community values its recreation opportunities, and we are pleased to partner with the Governments of Canada and Alberta to complete this upgrade,” said Mayor Bud James, Town of Killam. “The renovation project will result in a quality pool facility for all users in the broader region to enjoy, regardless of their age or mobility."
The Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program will invest $500 million in recreational facilities across Canada over a two-year period. It will provide a temporary economic stimulus that will help reduce the impacts of the global recession while renewing, upgrading and expanding recreational infrastructure in Canadian communities. A total of almost $153 million in RInC funding will be invested across the four western provinces.
