Report from the Hill - September 2009
September 15, 2009

This week Parliament resumes, and our Conservative Government has and will remain focused on the economy as our number one priority. While we see light at the end of the tunnel, Canada is still in the middle of a global economic recession and many Canadians are still looking for work. We realize that a potential recovery is still tentative and fragile, and that is why our focus remains on the economy.

Our Government was hard at work this summer as we continued to implement our Economic Action Plan. I was pleased to make many infrastructure funding announcements throughout our riding of Vegreville-Wainwright during the summer as part of the Economic Action Plan.  The funding for these projects is money well spent which will help position both our communities and our country to better strengthen our economy after this recession is over.

Our Government’s Economic Action Plan is working and we can’t risk our progress and our recovery with an election now – an election Canadians do not want and do not need. Not only is our Government focused on fighting the recession, but there are many important pieces of legislation that need to be passed during this session of Parliament. For example, several important Justice Bills were delayed by the majority Liberal Senate before the end of the last session of parliament, such as:

  • Bill-15, legislation to protect Canadians by imposing mandatory minimum penalties on producers, dealers and gangs that sell and produce illegal drugs; and
  • Bill C-26, legislation to crack down on auto theft.

Legislation such as this must be passed to keep Canadian families and communities safer.

As we begin the fall session of Parliament, our priority remains ensuring our Economic Action Plan is implemented in a timely and effective manner. We must also make certain that our legislation aimed at helping Canadian families, and creating safer Canadian communities, is passed. Frankly, it would be irresponsible of the opposition parties to interrupt work on the economy with an unnecessary and opportunistic election.

While the opposition parties are focused on the priorities of politicians, our Conservative Government is focused on the economy – the real priority of Canadians.

Sincerely,
Leon Benoit, MP
